'ClamAV is an open source (GPL) antivirus engine designed for detecting Trojans, viruses, malware and other malicious threats. It is the de facto standard for mail gateway scanning. It provides a high performance mutli-threaded scanning daemon, command line utilities for on demand file scanning, and an intelligent tool for automatic signature updates. The core ClamAV library provides numerous file format detection mechanisms, file unpacking support, archive support, and multiple signature languages for detecting threats. The core ClamAV library is utilized in Immunet 3.0, powered by ClamAV, which is a fast, fully featured Desktop AV solution for Windows.'
ClamXav is a graphic user interface for OS X based on Clam, a popular and powerful open-source and cross-platform antivirus.Until a few months ago you could download it for free, but now you have to buy it from the developer’ site. Dec 07, 2019 Yup, ClamAV is a command-line tool only but then there is a graphical tool ClamAV available to manage ClamAV. ClamAV is also cross-platform and is available for a host of desktop OSes including Windows and MacOS. Features At A Glance. ClamAV is not a real-time virus scanner. That is, it won’t scan files as you open them. ClamAV used to be a pretty good antivirus product (especially considering it's free), but I couldn't figure out why it has gone so bad lately. Recent reports show it only catching about 62% of infected files.

“Clam AV on a business workstation.”
Written on: 27/06/2011 by apnaqua (1 review written)
Clam AV is an opensource product, published under GNU license. Cooperation with developers is very straight forward, and can easily match commercial products. Moreover, it is possible to modify the code to fit your needs better. It is available for download, and since it's GNU, free to distribute under it's conditions.Clam AV is very savvy resource wise. The scanning speed is not the most impressive, but I can run it in the background and remain productive at the same time. It fits my needs… Read Full Review

It looks impressive..it says I am protected from 13,187,028 threats and that there are 241,232 people in the ClamAV Cloud. What I am wondering is this .. do I have any protection if I am no longer connected to the Internet? Am I totally dependent on having a connection to the Internet to protect me from any and all threats? If this were my only protection, it seems like all a virus would have to do is stop the connection… Read Full Review

You, buddy, are talking about immunet, not ClamAV. No, ClamAV does not require internet to work, and it utilizes it for updates.

ClamAV is a comprehensive virus scanning package. It is clear that it does not protect your computer against spyware, but with some common sense, that is scanning all new files that are being introduced through downloads or portable devices ( eg. iPod, cameras, flash disks, etc.). If you use Windows, make sure to turn off Auto-Play for all drives.

Why this tool?
ClamAV is a popular tool to detect malicious software or malware. While it calls itself an antivirus engine, it probably won't encounter many viruses, as they have become rare. It is more likely to find other forms of malware like worms, backdoors, and ransomware. ClamAV can be used in a few ways, from doing an occasional scan up to scanning in batch. ClamAV does not do on-access scanning but can be combined with other tools to obtain similar functionality. ClamAV is often used to support scanning incoming emails for malicious content.
How it works
The tooling has several components, including a daemon process named clamd. By using a Milter interface, email can be scanned within mail applications like Sendmail and Postfix. Optionally, the command-line utility clamdscan can talk to the daemon and request scanning of data.
ClamAV uses a few definition databases which contain the fingerprints of malware samples. Each utility responsible for scanning will work with this set of databases. The freshclam tool is a helper utility to update these databases.
Background information
The ClamAV project has a long history and is currently under development by Cisco. This is an indirect acquisition, as first the Snort project was acquired by Sourcefire. Then Cisco acquired Sourcefire in 2013, making it the new owner of the project.
Usage and audience
ClamAV is commonly used for malware analysis, malware detection, or malware scanning. Target users for this tool are general public, malware analysts, and system administrators.

Is the clam daemon (clamd) required to use ClamAV?The clam daemon process is not strictly required. https://high-powersenior.weebly.com/quicktime-player-for-mac-2019-catalina.html. The clamscan tool can be used to scan a directory or file without using the daemon.
